ICOMOS ICTC members lead heritage business development workshop in Perak, Malaysia

ICTC Malaysia representative Kenneth Wong, Principal of People Ideas Culture, curated a one-day workshop programme with Tourism Perak on September 10, 2017 to develop marketing approaches with stakeholders for unique aspects of the state’s industrial and cultural heritage. This was in response to Tourism Perak's request to consult with community, academic and industry stakeholders to determine how to best promote tourism that capitalized on the state’s industrial and cultural heritage. This included consideration to promoting Perak’s Kinta Valley, the focus of tin mining activity, as a World Heritage site or Geopark.

ICTC Canada member Fergus Maclaren was one of the speakers. The workshop was preceded with site visits by Wong and Maclaren to key destinations including the Tanjung Tualang Tin Dredge No. 5, Kellie’s Castle and the Kuala Sepetang Charcoal Factory. The workshop was comprised of two components: (1) industrial heritage business development and marketing approaches, and (2) the structure of heritage marketing plans.

At the event’s conclusion, there was significant interest expressed by Tourism Perak to conduct a subsequent workshop in April 2018. The intent is to further explore the drivers and barriers that affect industrial and cultural tourism development within the state, and how these tourism sectors can be better developed and promoted. Wong is currently negotiating with Tourism Perak to determine the calendar dates, venue, mandates and expectations for the workshop, incorporating a potential study mission with a select number of interested ICTC members.
